A Guide For Measuring Your Space
All You'll Need:
paper
pencil
measuring tape
Step 1: Sketch It Out
Using a pencil and clean white paper sketch out the general shape of the room from a bird's eye view. At the top, label the name of the room along with the ceiling height.

Step 2: Measure Each Wall
Using your tape measure, measure the entire length of each wall, corner to corner. Record each of these measurements on your drawing in either feet or inches.

Step 3: Mark Doors & Windows
Draw in any windows, doors, or openings started from the outside trim. Measure the length, width, and height of each opening and record each of the measurements on your drawing. Note: When measuring windows also include the floor to window and ceiling to window distance.

Step 4: Fill In The Details
Add in any additional measurements (wall to window, in-between windows, in-between doors, etc.)

Step 5: Add Fixed Features
Draw in any fixed objects in the room that cannot be moved (fireplaces, columns, etc.) and mark them on your drawing. Measure each of these items (example: measure the the length, width, and height of the fireplace including the hearth and mantle) and record each measurement onto your drawing.

Step 6: Double-Check
Review your drawing to ensure all walls, openings, and key details are clearly labeled. A neat, accurate sketch is vital to your design coming to life.
